Dental emergencies require immediate attention to prevent further damage, relieve pain, and protect your oral health:
- Severe toothache - Intense, persistent pain that disrupts your day
- Broken or chipped teeth - Damage from accidents, sports injuries, or biting hard objects
- Knocked-out teeth - Complete tooth loss from trauma (time-sensitive treatment)
- Lost fillings or crowns - Exposed tooth structure causing pain and sensitivity
- Dental abscess - Infection causing swelling, fever, and severe pain
- Broken dental work - Damaged crowns, bridges, or other restorations
- Jaw injury or pain - Trauma affecting your jaw function
- Uncontrolled bleeding - Persistent bleeding from teeth or gums

First Aid Before Your Appointment
For Severe Toothache
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water
- Use dental floss to remove any trapped food
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek
- Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed
- Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum
For Knocked-Out Tooth
- Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root
- Gently rinse if dirty (don't scrub)
- Try to place it back in the socket if possible
- If not, keep it moist in milk or between your cheek and gum
- See us within 30 minutes for best chance of saving the tooth
For Broken or Chipped Tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water
- Save any pieces you can find
- Apply gauze to any bleeding areas
- Use a cold compress to reduce swelling
- Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugarless gum
For Lost Filling or Crown
- Keep the crown if you have it
- Clean the affected tooth gently
- Temporary dental cement can protect the tooth until your appointment
- Avoid chewing on that side
Preventing Dental Emergencies
While not all emergencies can be prevented, these practices help reduce your risk:
- Regular dental checkups - Catch problems before they become emergencies
- Wear protective gear - Use mouthguards during sports activities
- Avoid hard foods - Don't chew ice, hard candy, or other items that can crack teeth
- Good oral hygiene - Prevent decay and infection through regular brushing and flossing
- Address problems early - Don't ignore tooth pain or other warning signs
